This is our CX-3 leaving our driveway earlier this morning. I didn’t think I would ever be a victim of auto theft.
And I freshly washed/detailed it last night.

Does the CX-3 have keyless start?
![]() 08/10/2019 at 11:54 |

Wow... That’s not something you expect to happen, and frankly I was under the impression that modern cars were extremely difficult to steal. I guess better the Mazda than the ST or the pickup. Strange that they didn’t take the Forte...

Sorry to hear that!

-At least the Ram is ok
-At least the ST is ok
-At least nobody was hurt or held at gunpoint
-That’s what insurance is for.
-Damn, sorry. )=
-Maybe time to store your wireless keys in a metal box?

Oh no!!!

Damn, that sucks! Im sorry, but as others have said, glad nobody was hurt. And Im glad it wasnt the truck. I hope the police and insurance can help you out.

If there’s a CarsofSurrey on Oppo, that’s where I’d tell the RCMP to start.
Sucks man, keyless start is convenient, but also convenient for theives.

What's the motivation for stealing a CX-3? Joyride? Revenge?
![]() 08/10/2019 at 12:10 |

Hopefully something that destroys it
![]() 08/10/2019 at 12:11 |

Hmmm... What's the plan?
![]() 08/10/2019 at 12:11 |

Fuuuuuuck... hopefully maybe some evidence on that camera will help find the assholes.
Sorry to hear it.

Get a rental and continue on with life as normal.

That sucks, I'm sorry to see this. Good luck getting it sorted

Gonna have to start using the Forte as a CLUB for the driveway I guess. Hopefully they catch the bastards but I seriously doubt that’s gonna happen in the lower mainland.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 12:26 |

I didn’t know cars this new could be stolen, hopefully the video has some evidence? Zoom and enhance?
![]() 08/10/2019 at 12:29 |

Damn, that sucks. I’m sorry.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 12:54 |

Damn, that sucks man!!! :(
That’s one of those times I am glad I don’t have something like keyless entry or proximity key or that junk...kind of hard to spoof a physical key in an ignition switch...not so hard to scan and spoof radio signals :(
The CX-3 was primarily your wife's car, wasn't it?
![]() 08/10/2019 at 12:57 |
|
Yeah, she can't drive manual so I'm on my way to rent one for her
![]() 08/10/2019 at 12:58 |

I'm glad I learned about the downsides of keyless entry before I got my cars. I'm paranoid so I got Faraday bags and keep the keys in them at all times.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 12:59 |
|
That's what a Faraday bag is for. I keep my keys in them at all times so it would be impossible to get the signal.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 13:11 |
|
Like people didn’t steal cars before keyless entry was invented?
Honestly , i think it would take more effort to steal and hotwire a keyless entry/ pushbutton start vehicle. Since you’d have to be moderately savvy with computers to clone wireless signals and you have to buy expensive specialized equipment to do it. Whereas you used to just need a slim j im and a screwdriver to steal a car.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 13:14 |

Any pictures of the perpetrator?
![]() 08/10/2019 at 13:15 |

I like my cars old and ugly. They’re less expensive to repair, and insure, too.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 13:16 |
|
Is the signal always out there? I’d’ve thought the manufacturers would make it more difficult than this.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 13:16 |
|
At the same time, old, ugly cars, the common two-bit thug won’t know how to operate.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 13:18 |
|
Damn... I didn’t think its possible to steal a modern car like that... at least not with the owner driving it.
They can do that, but can’t better the world.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 13:28 |
|
Perfect opportunity to teach her, and to destroy the clutch of the Forte
![]() 08/10/2019 at 13:46 |
|
Any idea if they cloned the key or was it close enough to jump in and start it? Regardless, this sucks , sorry.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 13:56 |
|
I'm guessing close enough
![]() 08/10/2019 at 13:56 |

Yeah, some video
![]() 08/10/2019 at 14:06 |
|
Man that sucks. I feel for your loss. It is more of a serious inconvenience than anything, but man; do not fuck with ano ther man’s car...hope they are caught and strung crotch-first over an ant hill.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 14:34 |
|
Ugh, that sucks. Sorry to hear this, man. I hope it gets sorted out quickly & smoothly.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 14:36 |

Thanks. It is part life, but my wife’s work stuff got stolen along with the key card to her police department. So that really sucked to get sorted for her
![]() 08/10/2019 at 14:40 |
|
Ugghhhgh, yeah, that sounds real annoying.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 14:50 |
|
Nope, it takes like $20 to make a transponder to steal a new car with proximity keys. It’s significantly easier to steal one.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 15:37 |
|
Yes and no. The signal is weak which is why normally you need to be standing next to the car. But car thieves have devices which can pick up and amplify the signal and it fools the car into thinking the key is within range, so it unlocks and starts the car.
But this only works if you keep your keys close to the front of the house, which is why I don't. My keys are in the middle of the house, but they're also in a Faraday cage so no signal gets out. With the keys in the bag even if I'm standing next to the car it won't open.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 16:09 |
|
That makes sense.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 16:43 |
|
Automakers should have large and multiple warnings, though. Like, don’t store your keys at the door, or keep it in something to block the signal.
My e-Golfs have a way to disable to keyless entry, but it’s not easy, and it defeats the purpose of the keyless entry. And I had to read through the manual to find it.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 17:08 |

fuuuuuuuck :”(
![]() 08/10/2019 at 17:14 |

That’s shitty. On the plus side, it’s just a vehicle, and no one was hurt.
Her key card will be deactivated and she’ll be issued a new one pretty quick, but it’s a pain in the ass to deal with. For the future (and not to be preachy) , I recommend not leaving work stuff in the vehicle because no one can be trusted.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 17:21 |
|
She was on call and had her “go bag” in there over night sadly. Otherwise, it isn’t in the car.
It sucks, but there isn’t any point in worrying about it. As you said, it's just a car. We just rented a car for her to drive to work and we'll worry about the insurance on Monday.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 17:27 |

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, that’s a crappy situation.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 17:31 |

GDMF...
![]() 08/10/2019 at 17:50 |
|
True, and I am glad this works, but it shouldn’t be necessary!
![]() 08/10/2019 at 17:56 |

That’s the thing, these days you don’t NEED specialized expensive equi
pment AT ALL. But with how cheap and available things like the Raspberry Pi are, getting the equipment to do stuff like that is child’s play nowadays if you know what you’re doing.
I always thought chipped keys were the best option because they have a chip that would have to be electronically spoofed to start the car, but you also have to defeat a physical key in a tumbler as well, or bypass it somehow...
They’re also not always spoofing the car’s electronic key, but also hacking into the car to teach it a NEW key signal and then just use that signal to drive off with it. CBC Marketplace up here in Canadialand did a decent episode on it while back:
![]() 08/10/2019 at 17:56 |

Exactly.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 17:59 |

I dunno though, what’s the real advantage of something like a proximity key other than the convenience of just having it in your pocket? If it’s this easy to electronically defeat them and steal a car and the only way around it is to keep them in a faraday bag or faraday cage in your house all the time......how hard is it to just go back to a physical key you insert and twist slightly?
Call me an old man yelling at clouds, I guess, but new keyless and proximity key systems just seem so....unnecessary to me for no massive gain in security or convenience. Like.....how lazy are we as a species that we can’t slide a thing into another thing and twist slightly anymore...
![]() 08/10/2019 at 18:00 |

I wouldn’t necessarily say I like mine old and ugly, but I do like them basic! :)
![]() 08/10/2019 at 18:08 |
|
There is no benefit other than having to press the unlock button.
I think a good way to prevent this without having to resort to Faraday bags is to go-lock your car. If your car is at home then it disables the keyless entry function. I would be okay with that.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 18:35 |
|
That could work, yeah.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 23:30 |

My 2011 Mazda 3 is a base model that doesn’t have any fob thingies whatsoever. Just a (chip) key.
![]() 08/10/2019 at 23:31 |

Old, ugly and basic. And thoroughly well maintained.
![]() 08/13/2019 at 00:27 |

They likely had a signal booster with them. It’s a popular method of stealing keyless cars. When you get home, chuck the keys in the fridge, it’s a faraday cage in there, or buy a faraday bag that blocks signals.
Either way, shitty thing to have happen.
![]() 08/13/2019 at 00:27 |

Yes, it is. The auto makers were fucking idiots.
